EULYNX is an European initiative launched by 13 railway Infrastructure Managers. Aiming for defining and standardizing interfaces in the future digital control command communication, signaling and automation system, the goal of EULYNX is a significant reduction of the lifecycle cost for signaling systems. Digitization brings major advantages to the railway system like continuous monitoring for condition based maintenance. On the contrary, there are a number of challenges with a widely distributed safety system that have been taken up by the EULYNX and result in a harmonization of approval processes in EU.
The cooperation between the ERTMS Users Group and EULYNX accelerated the emergence of the common cooperation in Reference CCS Architecture (RCA), which enables IMs to modernize their systems by going beyond the currently available ETCS L2 implementations. RCA is important for the future of the railway system because by using shared specifications, it creates a more attractive system/component market with larger scales, reduces the integration effort and lifecycle complexity. Moreover, by designing a system with built-in upgradability, it allows the railways to integrate innovations faster. This increased performance-/TCO-ratio will help to rise the competitiveness of the railway sector and, in the longer run, the market share of rail.
